The Piazza Navona, and the Fountain of the Four Rivers, are famous landmarks in Rome, visited for their aesthetic beauty, and also because of their interesting history. The Piazza Navona is located where there once was a Roman Circus, the Stadium Domitian, where brutal games were held, and it actually follows the plan of the ancient Circus, so you can really get a feel for how it once was. Aside from the Fountain of the Four Rivers, there are many other beautiful fountains and monuments found in the square, such as the Fontana del Moro, the Fontana di Nettuno, Palazzo de Cupis and Palazzo Braschi. The Fountain of the Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) is located in the centre of the Piazza Navona and is one of the most beautiful works of Gianlorenzo Bernini. It gets its name from its statues of four gods, which surround the Egyptian obelisk in the centre, which each represent the four major rivers of the world; the Danube, the Nile, the Plate and the Ganges.
